Our Inspiration and Cause

Someone very close to us was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was five years old. She used to give herself a shot five times a day and prick her finger to test her blood sugar levels ten or more times a day. Thanks to modern research, she has a pump that helps regulate her insulin input and which she only has to change every other day now. We have seen how important these medical advances are for her and other people affected with diabetes. Because of this, as we bike across America we are spreading awareness and raising funds for JDRF (the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation).

JDRF is the leading global organization focused on type 1 diabetes research Driven by passionate, grassroots volunteers connected to children, adolescents, and adults with this disease, JDRF is now the largest charitable supporter of T1D research. The goal of JDRF research is to improve the lives of all people affected by T1D by accelerating progress on the most promising opportunities for curing, better treating, and preventing T1D. Check out their website:

Matt and I marvel at her courage and optimism as she lives with her diabetes. She has made us appreciate life and helped us realize that when life gives you lemons, make lemonade. She is part of our inspiration for this bike ride; to live life to the fullest.
